Default Returning player question: Most sought after class?

    Hi all,

Like the title says, I'm gonna try and jump back in and find out what is best in life.

After reading a bunch of posts I can see that healers seem to be kind of scarce. So I was wondering if those are indeed the most sought after classes right now. I'd be trying to get back into some PVE leveling/endgame, so I wanted to make sure I'm rolling the class that will help find groups for content much easier. Also if this is the case I was thinking about going with the PoM as my healer choice. Any info/feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Side Note: I realize that I actually have to be decent with the class, not just herp derp invite cuz heals dun matter if I'm ****.

There is something you need to understand about AoC, no class has dedication to pure healing only, it all consists of only 2 heals over time and 1 burst + 1 big burst from AA so 20% of your attention span during a fight.

2 conqs with healing banner and carnage party heal rotation can heal the same if not more than a priest blue heal (strongest) and demo crit/pet spec has a party wide green heal (weakest) as strong as any priest without any cast time, heck even dt has it's own green heal + hex self heal and also leeches more life than a priest heal per second on some encounters.

If you want to play a priest, you need to keep in mind that the difference between a good and bad one isn't the ammount of healing done with your heals over time (bot monkey job) but the dps while maintaining their 2 heals over time as well as using their burst heal ability when needed.

To think about it, the only 2 classes without healing mechanics are the guardian (Except general ^^) and the ranger.

    Good luck.

i always play tanks but lately i've been playing a Bearshaman, and its one of most fun classes i've know in MMO history...
i don't like casters nor any ranged class, so i can only speak for this one, try it out, healers are always wanted

Thanks for the info. Even from having played a couple hours, I saw tons of spam looking specifically for bear shaman/TOS/POM. These classes obviously known more for support/healing right? Like I didn't see any spam asking for 2 conqs with healing banner/carnage heal. So my main question was which of these "Support" classes is more sought as far as group content goes. Since I figure there will be tons of conq/sin running around. I just wanted to make sure I roll a class that's in high demand.

EDIT: Main concern is I don't want to roll a Sin/dps class and then get constantly passed up for a support class because not that many people play them.

Keep it simple, classes do take multiple roles but primary roles are these; priests are healers, soldiers are tanks, rogues and mages and dedicated dps.

    Welcome back.

Class demand is less important in AoC than in many other games in my experience, as many players have multiple alts to switch to. It is more important to pick a class whose mechanics appeal to you, i. e. that are fun to play.

If you want to pick a class by rarity alone, stay away from barbarian, conqueror and dark templar, as those are pretty popular. A healer or mage is a good choice. In the Raidfinder, healers are almost always the last class to fill, and the Raidfinder might be viable way to go for a player returning to the game and maybe raiding.

Among healers, all three are great. Between these classes, I'd pick which ever appeals to you the most. To play a healer well, one has - as has been said - to develop its non-healing capabilities. All three can be very decent damage dealers, surpassing even pure damage classes. Compared to other MMORPGs, they play more as secondary healers - the healing more or less runs on its own, leaving you free to do other stuff. So, one should be comfortable with their secondary (or primary) aspects.

    - BS is hardest to play imho - great potential, but requires some talent and planning to play to optimal efficiancy. It increases the damage by tanks and physical damage dealers (barb / sin / ranger) and has good crowd control and debuffs. It's like a rabid care bear. It heals with the power of love, but sometimes, it accidently hugs somebody to death or eats the face off. Also, they smell weird if they get wet.

    - The ToS excels in AoE damage and is fun to level. It helps mages and PoMs to do damage by increasing mana regeneration significantly. It has the weakest crowd control of all three classes, but regularly excels in damage. Playing it is similar to whack-a-rat - mesh buttons as quickly as possible and cackle sadistically doing it. Then die and complain about bad tanking. Then use your self-rezz, laugh like a maniac again and start all over again. You don't have weapons of mass destruction, you are a weapon of mass destruction.

    - The PoM has slightly better healing potential than the other two classes and superior crowd control, which makes him a generalized defense specialist. It can skill some weirdly powerful burst damage powers, e. g. Holy Cleansing. Imagine the PoM as a goalkeeper (in soccer) with a first aid kit, a taser, a single hand grenade, a seemingly benevolent smile and a weird spark in his/her eyes.

Thanks so much for all your replies guys You've answered everything I needed. I fully understand the whole "it's not really all about your heals being good" deal. It's mastering the perfect mix of dps/heal combo that is the support classes in this game. I will be rolling a PoM and doing my best! See you all out there.

Thank you again for the detailed breakdown.

If you're on any priest you'll be expected to dps like a champ and add to the group/raid with CC's and abilities at the right time plus doing your healing task. Best bet is to join a guild, try the three archetype classes out and see what you like best then seek out people in the guild who know the class well. They can help out with gear, feats/builds, factions, alternative advancement tree, combo/spell rotations, situational advice, how to position your toon, when to big heal and when not to. If you start off right it'll make your experience much better.

As to what is needed most, that's kind of difficult to answer. I used our guild bot the other day and the total number of each class registered with it was pretty similar, that doesn't however take into account how often these toons are played!
In certain dungeons, for example Sepulcher of the Wyrm, if you have a Tos and a BS or POM in the group, at the last boss it makes sense to put the BS or POM up with the two tanks and leave the TOS down as there's lots of adds and the TOS is best of the three with AOE. But that's not to say the dungeon cannot be done with a BS or POM in place of the TOS.

My personal preference for game play is Bear Shaman > TOS > Pom. but everyone will be different.
