Thread: CPU upgrade time?

  1. #61

    I still feel well with my LGA1366 and 12GB installed three years ago. I assume that one should wait and get the newest LGA2011 (with DDR4, which is not released yet) with a six- or eight-core CPU and memory modules set in quadruples if he has money.

    I used to play both PVP and PVE with Pentium 4 Prescott, single-core, 3GHz, 3GB back in 2009 (December) - 2010 (September).

    • Remove daily rewards and the raid finder;
    • remove membership bonuses;
    • disable PVE XP for daily challenges;
    • remove WBs forever on Crom;
    • slow down the AA gain;
    • lower the PVP XP gain or remove the streak system;
    • remove AoE looting;
    • add the missing mobs back to Khesh., F. of the Dead, and Eigl. Mount.;
    • fix the 250+ms ping;
    • take the key away from Saddur;
    • revert T3, T3.5 (10.21.15), T4 (10.21.15), and GGG changes;
    • remove energy and add skills (like taunt) back.

    I'm kind of in the same position as the original poster.....

    E8400 @ 3.8ghz
    Abit IP35-E mother board
    4 GB GSkill 1066 Ram @ 980mhz (yeah had to underclock to get the CPU oc stable)
    PNY GTX560ti 1 GB video card
    2 21.5" monitors (1 LCD, 1 LED)
    3 1 TB 7200 rpm hard drives
    Creative Labs Xtreme Gamer sound card
    Corsair 750TX power supply
    Antec 9000 case

    Seems that no matter what I do, this game and any others I try to play have evolved so much that I am at 70-80% CPU usage and my video card is hitting mid to upper 60's..

    I remember getting in the 150 fps range for a long time in AOC...... now I'm lucky to get 30 consistently.

    Your GPU is good enough for a game like AoC (in fact it's still decent even with newer games) but you should really upgrade your CPU. That means upgrading motherboard and RAM I know, but it would be worth it. I dunno about latest CPUs but I know something like an i5 2500("k" if you want to OC) would pair extremely well with your GPU and give you a massive performance boost (even more so in a game like AoC where the GPU usage is low)

    Xenic, that might be your HDD getting weary. But yes, our CPU's need upgrading

    Also that is not enough RAM for AoC

    the funny thing is that this PC used to blaze AOC. It was very good. It seems as time has gone on, they made it more and more resource intensive.

    What does the HDD have to do with fps? Also, HDDs don't "get weary", unless they are failing. And he has 3 of them anyway.

    And yes Xenic, I used to play AoC maxed (dx9 and no AA though) in 1080p with an e8400 (at 4ghz) and a GTS 8800 512. More than 30fps in raids with maxed settings. Today the same system would probably get 10fps
    The Dreamworld update was sadly a bit of a bad joke (although it did make dx10 fully playable).

    My system (2010) with updated memory (2011) and GPU (2012):

    Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2;
    CPU: LGA1366 i7-930, 2.8GHz @ 3.1GHz;
    RAM: triple-channel 12GB: 6x2GB DDR3-1333MHz @ some weird MHz value and a higher voltage;
    Drives: 700GB (750Gb) SATA 2 and ASUS Blu-ray/DVD-RW;
    Sound: Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium, PCIe;
    GPU: MSI GTX680, 2GB;
    OS: Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

    Notes:
    1. The CPU generation was designed to be overclocked (it was even advertised like that), and not boosting its performance seemed like a waste of cash; therefore I sped it up just a bit.
    2. When I set Nvidia settings to their default values and turn all details to maximum in the game with all particles on, I get around 15-30 FPS in raids, 15 being the average (that means that FPS can go down to 8!) when I am close to the raid and the boss.
    3. I had to go from 6GB to 12GB to avoid crashing and remove paging file.

    4GB is certainly not enough for the game!
    I would love to hear a report from someone with LGA2011 and DDR4!
