Whats the point of making someone your apprentice?

one it raises you to the person level well one level below that persons. Not only does it make you tougher i believe but helps with experience gain if you have a friend who is way higher level than you.

When you apprentice someone they become -1 your level temporarily, for example

lvl 40 apprentices a lvl 20, the lvl 20 becomes 39

He still has his same stats etcc just hits a little harder and can still only use his lvl 20 equipment, the difference is you dont take the level penalty..

if a lvl 20 and 40 were grouped the lvl 20 would get 1 exp when fighting any type of mob..

Now you both get the same.

Apprentice a low level, stick with the high level killing what he usually kills and you get the same exp he would usually get! a lvl 20 basically getting the kill exp a level 40 would get

This is a perfect thread for me to launch into storytime though -

I (level 44 PoM) accepted an invite to a Sanctum of the Burning Souls run last night and noticed that three of the other five people were <30. The next highest aside from me was level 39.

My initial thoughts and comments were "Hmmmm - this ain't gonna work - we are all going to die" to which the answer was "apprentice".

Long story short, one of the little guys dropped out (so we were down to five), the rest were apprenticed and we cleared the whole area with minimal deaths (never danger of a whipe) and one pull we had five mobs (all 38-39 elite). Now I was the only healer and I did notice that it was more of an effort to keep them up (and I had to drink a potion on the larger pulls because of OOM issues) but we did it. One of the guys who was apprenticed was doing well as an offtank (taking blows from a level 39 elite mob).

So I had doubts, but apprentice works well in those instances and the youngsters got some good loot out of it.
