Odd. I've never had to do that type of messing around with it.

I've run the whole gamut from having one running SQL 2008 Ent with a full SSAS / PP2007 deployment on it, another as a straight desktop with standard Office tools on it, another for a pure development machine (Mix between Visual Studio, Borland's tools and Installshield) with multiple XP VMs (I was running 10 XP VMs at one stage on that box) to simulate a number of networked users with activity and so forth.

And then of course, one for gaming.

No problems at all with any of the tasks I've thrown at it.

Ever heard of compatibility mode? Would have saved you a lot of time and effort.

I have compatibility mode on for AoC and it hasn't helped at all.

This may be part of your problem. AoC installer installs an old version of DX.. most games do. Honestly wish games would give the option NOT to install DX as they try to install old garbage usually

Also you might want to go to ATI themselves for the vid drivers. I usually avoid drivers from the card makers like Asus as they generaly stop supporting the cards after a few months and move onto the next.

I just downloaded for the 4870 and it seems to be the same as the 5870 file.


Also make sure that you DONT run upgrade for W7. Even M$ Recomends a clean install whenever possible. Most people I have seen with issues in W7 usually do upgrades, always a mistake. If you are going to upgrade your OS always take the time to do it right. After all your programs, files and photos will be on the system. Why risk loosing your data or having issues because of old drivers or files.

I dont have a 5870, however i do run W7 w 8gigs and a 4870x2. Have been using W7 for 6 months on my primary gaming pc. AoC w/ W7did have a few issues in the early release days but since then its been a lot smoother and more reliable for AoC / DDO / WoW / CoD .. etc etc..

Vista is a mistake, if you need to go backwards put XP. There is a reason why most companies refused Vista and why M$ is charging more for Vista then it is for a newer OS W7. Reason being is Vista is bugridden, slow, and a generaly causes more issues then it ever solved.

of course, it failed to work for what i needed, tried everything and gave up, imho w7 is too early in its infancy to be reliable enough i:e having good working drivers for everything and game/program compatibility. Treras you are more tech savvy than me by far

Wow, you are either crazy or did an upgrade install and not a fresh one. Windows 7 runs so much smoother than Vista. Plus, all the current drivers are Vista/Win7 so Win7 doesn't need a whole new driver format like Vista did when it came out. I'm not going to say there aren't any bugs in it, but it's so much lighter and stable than Vista ever was.

I have read alot of technical forums on subjects like this.
There are some issues with the new i& processor and some of the high end Nvidia cards particularly the GTX 280.
There are also a lot of issues with games like AOC that were designed using the new Nvidia cuda technology. The game was designed to run on Nvidia cards hence the Nvidia logo when you boot up the game. Many of these games run buggy with ATI graphics cards. The game may be looking for a component in the video driver that is not in the ATI driver you installed. I am not saying Nvidia is better if fact the best card for your money right now is the ATI cards as you can get a comparable ATI card for about 100 buck less than the equivalent Nvidia card.

I have not yet shelled out the money for windows 7 but I fully intent to. just waiting till I upgrade to a new Mobo/cpu as to your mobo/cpu combination windows 7 activation code will register only install on one PC. You can reinstall it on the same PC using the same code. Even upgrade graphics cards and such but if you change cpu/mobo you will need a new license.I am not spending 300 bucks on a full version of windows 7 just to need to buy a new license when I upgrade.

Windows 7 wanted to install a asus driver for my ati card ,even after i downloaded,and install the driver from ati.All i did was hide the update from windows,and had not a problem since.
