Its a toss up really. Some games are better with ATI, others NVidia. Performance wise, they seem to leapfrog each other with new card releases. I use NVidia because its what I know and they "seem" to be more widely supported than ATI.

I use an HD 4870 X2 @ 1920x with 12xCFAA|16xAF, bloom, full shadows, max ground quality radius and all the rest set to high. I've yet to see less than 35FPS. Old Tarantia harbor use to drop my overclocked GTX 260 to 18FPS in some areas as above but with only 4xAA. Min there with the HD 4870 X2 and 12xCFAA is 35FPS. I love the card. I have my core bumped up to 800 from 750.
The reason it runs well on current ATi hardware is not because of FC and rather design choices made by ATi.
ATi's AA is also slightly better than nVidia's in some instances-

I agree ATI looks better in AoC then Nvidia. I replaced an 8800 gts for Crossfire 4850.
Can you confirm Kesh is better now? Cos 2 months ago it was really lame and pvp was undo-able.
Which drivers you use? You seem having done your homework to get maximum fps

I have heard that twin NVIDIA SLI cards, specifically 9800s is the way to go, so that's my plan (when I find the money).

SLI 9800 or the duo card is expensive. I bought my 2 x ATI 4850 for $270, I wanted to buy another 8800 gts but that card was over $400

Well sure, if you're using the brand spankin' new, top of the line ATI cards, it might play a little better than an older NVIDIA card. What I'm saying is, it says NVIDIA on the load screen and every one of the many people I've talked to with NVIDIA cards says that the game runs well over 30FPS. It is a well known fact that the 3000 series of ATI cards has issues with this game. Now, perhaps older ATI cards don't, I don' know. I know for a while the 4000 series cards had the same problem. Perhaps they fixed that, who knows. My point is that my 3870X2 runs this game about as well as my old 2600 did and that is an issue that -still- needs to be addressed.

You wrote all that for nothing just admit you were wrong on the blanket statement.
Was only responding to your false generalization of what I quoted from your post...specifically about ATI>Nvidia>AoC performance.
Quoting again from your post for emphasis

= NO
Now if you said "Nvidia (insert card here) runs this game better then my 3870x2 card" hey you got a valid point.

I haven't tried either.
So far, I love the card. If that changes, I'll sound off.

Uhh I'm running AoC at 60 FPS on HIGH with a 9800 GTX, a Q6600, and 2GBs of memory @800MHz.
SO I dunno what your guy's problems are with the 8800's since they are supposedly 'equal' to the 9800. >_>
Oh, and little nifty thing I found out.
32bit applications can only use 2GB of memory, or rather are programmed to only use up to 2GB of memory. Combine that with my 512MB Video card, No need for me to get 3GBs of memory, let alone 4, cause with XP32bit, cant go above 3.25GBs anyways. And goign with just 3GBs would make my memory slower anyways.
Everthought maybe this is your problem? :P

I have SLi with 2 280GTX's. I alos have a Dell 30" monitor. Running at 2560 x 1600?(something like this) with AA at 4X 16 Aniso and get consistent frames no leess than 40, going from 70 to 40ish depending on the scenes. I have VErt Lock on or they may go higher. Only setting which seems to imact performance is in the Game Driver setup in the nvidia panel, if i set the game for performance as opposed to quality, u have 4 choices, I get no issues at all. QUality causes a bit less frames and some occasional chop. Just installed the ?.24 drivers. Most of my distance options are maxed out as well. No complaints with m nvidia card and i can't imagine it could look much better. 8x or higher AA does but i like being 40+ on the frames.

I disable Crossfire on my 2 x ATI 4850 and the game runs just as fast, if not better slightly on a single card.
This might be why 3750x2 or whatever card doesn't perform well.
