I lost a lot of fun playing a Barb when they took away combo cancelling and Zerker became a lot weaker...

Try a hybrid build now. Berserker is definitely stronger now than before, and especially with a demo, guard and bs in group. I've done amazing crits as Berserker. http://goo.gl/lUdHFk

With the T5 rune, it becomes kind of a problem with all the uncontrollable burst. T5 finesse hits can be 20% extra damage alone.
