    Default Some beginner questions

    Hi,

Could somebody explain in simple words what they mean:

    1. binding - an item is bound or I'm bound to an area
    2. instance
    ?

I've read about them in the manual but I'm not sure I understand the concepts.

    Thanks a lot!

    Binding means:

for an item, it means that you can't sell or trade away that item. You can sell it to vendor, put it in back or surplus inventory but it will always be locked to that character

Binding in a raid or dungeon means that the area you entered is bound to the raid/group leader for the games control of the timer for completed dungeons (i.e. its bound so that if you do a t2 raid and finish it you can't go back in for the week til raids reset)

Instance: each zone will keep track of the number of people in that area. If there are too many for the server to handle then it will make a new instance, or version of that zone. If you need to change an instance then you need to find a ress pad and click on change instance option from the orange triangle on the upper right map icon

So, does it mean that nobody else can use it, even if they buy it from a vendor?

Does it mean it's possible to create one's own "private" area? Any particular reason to do that, apart from server overcrowding?

you won't be able to put that item for sale, so nobody will be able to buy it.
what Anubium said, "You can sell it to vendor", means to sell the item to an NPC, which means that the item is removed from the game.

some areas, specifically dungeons for 6 and 24 man are instanced areas, which means that only your group/raid can enter there.
in a 6 man dungeon you can enter alone and stay as long as you like, while if you enter alone in a 24 man instance, you will be kicked in about a minute.

the reason to have instanced dungeons is that you will be able to fight the bosses without anybody else interfering in the fight.

To expand on what others have said:

On items you will see these phrases.

"Character Bound" - Means it is bound to your character. It can't be traded. You can sell it to a vendor. Items you sell to a vendor can not be seen by other players.
"Bind on Pickup" - The moment you pick the item up and it goes into your inventory, it will be bound to you.
"Bind on Equip" - The item will only be bound to you if you equip it. If not equipped, it can be traded to other players.

If an item does not have any of these phrases indicating binding, it can be freely equipped, then traded at any time.

With instance binding, solo/singleplayer zones may have instances bound to you. These are usually story related or single-player dungeons. You can not pick and choose to create an instance of any zone bound only to you. Solo instances, as well as Group instances will be bound to you for differing lengths of time. Raids will always be bound till the next Raid Reset which is Tuesday early-early morning US EST time.

In order for a raid to be bound, though, the raid has to have killed a boss in that instance. So if you go on a t4 raid and they don't kill sheng, then you can go back with another guild and still go into a new instance for the t4 raid.

You will get a message once you are 'bound' to that instance.
