    You can't deduce the right level of imbalance from what is "inherent to MMOs", it's a question of what players are willing to accept. And experience shows that games which eliminate the gear gap (e.g. structured PvP in GW2), or which allow you to obtain gear quite fast (e.g. WoW) do better than a game like AoC with its focus on grinding. Hell, think back to how attractive PvP was in AoC, when there was no AA and PvP didn't have any gear rewards worth speaking of - and then compare it to now, when we have the carrots of new PvP T1, and then T2 and T3 dangling in front of our face. Maybe the gear grinding carrot just isn't that tasty. Maybe there is a larger number of players who would rather compete on a level playing field, which allows them to win by skill (if they are good) or work on improving their skills (if they are not good yet).
    Gear grinding carrot can have different forms. Some people want gear because they want became stronger. Some people want gear because they are completionist and like to gather all stuff. Some people want gear because it looks cool. Some people want gear just because they don't want to give this gear to other players. Some people want gear because they want to make specific build or specific use and think what this gear fit into this plan. AoC don't have their own way, they just get ideas from other games and use it with their own specific way. They have impressive raid bosses (gameplay wise), they have impressive looking sets (with **** stats), but their PvP system lets a lot to desire. PvP system in AoC don't make AoC PvP unique. Gameplay mechanic in AoC make AoC PvP unique. All PvP in AoC stand on good will and effort from players, Funcom don't bring anything to table with it. That's why it wasn't totally their fault what PvP goes downside in AoC. Main problem - decreasing amount of players.

    That is no doubt true. It's kind of funny - the whole concept turned on players playing together just for the sake of it, with hardly any effort put into objectives or rewards. And then they disabled group signups. Good thinking
