What is the Hidden Treasure Chest system?

So, like, what is it?

Are these specific quests or just chests you may run across?

If they're just things you might come across, how are they identified?

Is there a thread or something that covers this in detail?

So, these are just chests you run across like the one in the hall just past the wine room in the Tortage Underhalls, I'm assuming.

I've done about five or six zones so far, and only one chest required a key from an NPC in nobles so far (had to find the npc in epic mode). All the chests were very evident when you looked into tents and such. Some were in hidden areas, but the chests are all pretty decent in size and not hard to see when you find one.
