the idea of adding a guard to such a blade just takes it one more step over the top.

Especially when looking at the "guard" it's easy to see how a downwards sliding lightsaber would hit and cut the emitter. But if you think lightsabers are silly, what about lightwhips?

Those didn't look good from the start.

Regarding that trailer... it doesn't tell much.
I fear already the silly robots acting as lolcats ... the sword, why did you have to put more ? But at least it might mean more down to earth combats with less kung-fu in 0 gravity environement feel (wishful thinking i fear). I just hate it when fights in movies are outrageously exagerated with people jumping all over the place worse than guild wars animation and of course... in the middle of a erupting volcano with an A-bomb ticking in their backpack and a train to catch in five minuts.
