Thread: Need advice on building PC for conan

It doesn't take very much to run this game good. The suggestions from the guys above are of course great and some way of doing it good. Depends on budget and own pc mechanic skills what you want to spend and how advanced you want to go.

AoC is a poorly written game performance wise, and what I found through four computers the last years is this.

GPU doesn't matter much as long as it has enough memory for your resolution and is specced for DX10 (which all new cards are). Single core cards and single gpu cards (no crossfire or sli) performs best. Some dualcore GPU's actually have less frames per second than their single core counterpart due to AoC not taking advantage of the extra power in a proper way. You should go for a medium range GPU, where the choice between NVidia or AMD would be a personal one, or if some cards is discounted by some amount. So to summarize, single core cards, single cards are better for AoC.

CPU matters much. By changing from a Core 2 Duo E8400 which was clocked to 4,5 Ghz, to a i7 4770K, I doubled my framerate. This is your main spender on your budget. Some Intel processor with 6MB or higher cache. i5 and i7 are the better ones, and look for the "K" versions, meaning you can use auto overclocking in BIOS. On newer motherboards this is actually quite good.

RAM and storage isn't of great importance in Age of Conan, as long as you have enough of it. 8GB RAM and a decent storage device (no green power 5400rpm ****) and you're set. 7200 rpm harddisk (Western digital black and Seagate Barracuda are good) or a 240GB SSD (samsung and intels are good). SSD's improve boot time, launch time of applications and loading times in game.

A proper PSU that should be of the "80 plus gold" certification.

Case, monitor, peripherals as you please and can afford from the rest of budget. I have a Razer Taipan mouse and a Logitech G710+ that I am quite pleased with, though might be out of your price range. Fractal cases are nice and cheap. If you can afford go for a 1920x1200 resolution on the monitor.

You can do fine with a lower spec machine as well. Just get a good CPU and a decent GPU.

If he doesn't know anything about hardware, I wouldn't suggest him to try overclocking

The problem with $1500aud (roughly 1000€) is that it's good to build a computer if you already have a monitor. Since you don't, it's a bit harder. And since I can't find a Iiyama reseller in Australia, it's even harder. They really make good and cheap monitors.

I'd suggest you take a look at what we all said, choose the components and come back with a list (and links, because being in France doesn't help for in finding Australian tech resellers) for more advices.

As others have said. CPU makes the biggest gains in AoC. You should also consider overclocking the CPU as well for the best boost possible.

Personally I would try and grab the Haswell 4790k CPU. Running at 4.4ghz out of the box would net you some nice gains. Also being unlocked you can squeeze a little more out of it if you wish.

I also disagree with others recommending the GTX 770. It is overpriced for what you get. I would sooner buy an AMD 280x at $269.99 vs the cheapest 770 at $319.99. The 280x performs just as good or better than the 770 at a lower price. Put the money saved into the CPU.

I know you are on a tight budget. So this is all just food for thought.

Manually overclocking, definitely no. However most motherboards comes with an "auto overclock" feature that you can click "on" in BIOS. This is good enough overclocking for the guy who is interested in a bit more power but not interested in the research and work to squeeze that last hz out of the cpu.

There are plenty of easy to read guides out there on overclocking. Its not hard to do an anyone can learn how with a little reading.

As advised by most of others:
    SSD: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...5023&cPath=909
Place Windows (OS) and Age of Conan on this HDD, but make sure that all temporary files are saved on the HDD, not on SSD.

    Other notes:
HDD size should be around 500GB-1TB, as you would have a Blu-ray drive for films and audio discs, and you probably do not need to process large data for a film that you are making or download 20 big game titles.
To go safe, pick 1TB if you have the money. You should install all the fans on your case, as the climate of your country is hot.

Mouse has adjustable sensitivity on itself so that you can adapt it to your hand.

Operating system can be either Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1: but make sure it is Premium (to get access to extra memory) and 64-bit! Upgrade to Windows 9 as soon as possible (it is not out yet!), as Windows 7 SP1 will be no longer supported in a few years, and Windows 8.1 is just ugly (no Aero), schizophrenic (two interfaces), and inconvenient unless you are into modding it.

Ask to attach the following fans to the case: 1 14" in front (sucking in the case), 2 12" on top (sucking out of the case), 1 12" on the back (sucking out of the case).

If you want to sacrifice something, do not order SSD (use HDD only) and speakers (use headphones and microphone), though your missus might be angry at you for not being able to watch a Blu-ray together.

    Let us count the money:
    Sub-Total: $2517 :-(

Let me edit it a bit...

With some poor speakers, removed card reader, and a different PSU.

But this computer will last for 5 years!

Are you trying to ruin him? That's $1000 over his budget!

First, you don't need a fancy motherboard. Basic usage means basic needs. All the "Gamers' Choice" attributes are mostly marketing crap. The same goes for the memory. As long as you pick a trusted brand, ValueRAM is as good as the shiny modules, and costs less.
Next, with a 250GB SSD, you can have a 100GB partition for your system (all the Users files can be easily moved to another disk) and a 150GB partition for AOC and some other games. Remember to always keep at least 15% of your SSD free of data.
Both cases include 2 fans, it saves money.
You don't need to buy video cables, you'll get at least one with the monitor.
Unless you're using exotic-sized cards, you don't need a card reader either. Your phone will do the job.
    Yes, Windows is expensive.
I have selected brands famous for the good quality of their products. I find that paying a bit more to have reliable components is always a good choice.

Remember that you will have to make choices. We can't decide for you. Sadly, it will probably cost you more than $1500aud. How much is up to you.

With the correct links and prices now.

    The basics

Case: Fractal Design R4 Black Pearl (or Titanium Grey) $139
    Power Supply: Antec HCG520 $89
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4590 $215
    RAM: Kingston ValueRAM PC12800 DDR3 2x4GB $83
    Motherboard: Asus H81M-E LGA 1150 $65
    GPU: MSI GeForce GTX770 OC 2GB $349
    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB $139
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM Sata3 3TB $125
    Keyboard: Logitech K120 $19
    Mouse: Roccat Kova+ $69
OS: Windows Seven Home Premium x64 $115

    Total: $1407

What you can change to save money

    Case: Cooler Master K282 $49
    HDD: 2TB ($95) or 1TB ($65)

    Total: $ -120 or $ -150

What you can add that would be useful, but is not really needed (and it costs money)

CPU Fan: Noctua NH-L12 Low Profile $75
    RAM: 2x Kingston ValueRam PC12800 DDR3 8GB $89
    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB $265
Keyboard: Ozone Strike Mechanical Keyboard $99
    Mouse: Logitech G502 ($79), Logitech G402 Hyperion ($49), Logitech G600 MMO ($79), Razer Naga Hex ($69)
Optical Drive: Blu-Ray drive ($69) or DVD burner drive ($19)

    Total: Probably too much.

    About the sound

You don't really need a sound card, but you can get one cheap and good like the Asus Xonar DGX ($39). If you want a better one, go for the Creative Sound Blaster Z ($125). Either way, something like the Creative Inspire T10 ($41) is enough to play AoC and listen to some music, and you can have a Zalman ZM-MIC1 ($9). But if you live with someone or play FPS like CS:GO, you need a good headset. The SteelSeries Siberia v2 ($89) is quite good. I currently have a Logitech G35 ($129), and it's really good, even if a little heavy afters 2-3 hours. The must is the Sennheiser PC360 Game, but it's not on this site either. So you need to go a little higher with the Sennheiser PC363D ($279). You won't even know it's on your head.

    Total: Up to you, really.

    About the monitor

This site has no Iiyama either, so I have no idea what to advice. Be sure to get a 16:10 though (1920x1200).

Please, select advice from any person, put the parts from the site above into the shopping cart and share the result here (you can share the basket on that site) so that people can check if parts work with each other or something is missing.

Btw..i dunno the price of electricity in Australia per kwh but you should know that overclocking CPU and/or GPU raises the kwh per year a lot - about 1/4 to 1/3. I would never suggest anyone using these features except he knows what he´s doing. You can easily destroy your gear. I would suggest to skip the K at intel processors - saves money at buying and uses much less electricity - two birds with one shot.
