Thread: Guardian Levelling Build?

  1. #1

    Default Guardian Levelling Build?

    I am returning to the game after a long absence and considering rolling a Guardian. Any advice for a good levelling build would be appreciated.

    Also, for levelling, is sword and board better or polearm?

    Pole arm by far. Head down the tempest/general tree bypass anything that has to do with generating hate and max everything that has to do with DPS/cooldowns. Save your offline levels for the last 5 or so levels. I never really concerned myself with gear but I was rushing to 80 using gear I picked up on quests/ some sanctum stuff.

    I'd always advice people to go for the build/playstyle they intend to play in the endgame while leveling. However, in case of guardian, a sword and shield guardian has the lowest dps in the game so you might be better of using a polearm spec while leveling.

    In terms of a build, since low level feats of guardian are not spectacular in any case i'd say just go for feats that give you a higher dps. Maybe something like this: http://goo.gl/VjPm6

    Wouldn't going straight for the general tree for starters be a good idea, to get Guarded Frenzy before lvl 30? Decent amount of dps gained from speccing that way anyhow, but not sure how it would compare to starting out with tempest first.

    I think it would depend on your play style as well. I leveled all my soldiers in tanking specs and stayed in defensive while leveling/soloing. However, I do like to pull mobs in larger groups and dps them down all together.

    I really dislike guarded frenzy, but for leveling on a polearm guard, staying in frenzy and applying reckoning with frenzy stance gives a lot of burst dps so it could actually work well too. Nevertheless, keep in mind that if you go frenzy most of the time, with or without the buff by guarded frenzy, you'll die very fast due to negative mitigation in lower levels if you're not very careful with your pulls and positioning.

    And the most important feat for leveling in the build i posted is stalwart because a boost to hit rating at lower levels is crucial. Since the gear doesn't have any you regularly miss combos. any type of buff to hit rating should be very welcome.

    I have not had a single problem levelling a sword-and-shield guardian. Just switch stances often and move a lot.
    The hardest to level are sword-and-shield rangers and any nonranger class with either bow or crossbow, maybe.
    • Remove daily rewards and the raid finder;
    • remove membership bonuses;
    • disable PVE XP for daily challenges;
    • remove WBs forever on Crom;
    • slow down the AA gain;
    • lower the PVP XP gain or remove the streak system;
    • remove AoE looting;
    • add the missing mobs back to Khesh., F. of the Dead, and Eigl. Mount.;
    • fix the 250+ms ping;
    • take the key away from Saddur;
    • revert T3, T3.5 (10.21.15), T4 (10.21.15), and GGG changes;
    • remove energy and add skills (like taunt) back.

    You can be in frenzy or at least unstanced for most of the levelling. Pop defensive when you run in to a big pull.

    For that reason S&S works fine. But i still recommend pole for levelling and solo play in Khitai for more efficiancy and burst damage.

    But don't forget to practice your S&S in the groups while levelling up. Because chances are you will be doing most of your instances in Khitai as a S&S.
    My main alts:
    Cylien Assassin - Whirlwind of death. As in dies a LOT
    Scythie Conqueror - And Petal her mammoth
    Karalee Guardian - "My sergeant says an army marches on it's belly. But I ain't never seen that! "Shakes her head vigorously"

    Shameless self promotion

    I read this post a few levels ago while playing my guard in tortage so i switched to polearm to try it out. I would have to say the range makes a huge difference. I stay in defensive and swing that thing around and everything in front of me dies. Another advantage is how cheap blue polearms are at my level

    Thumbs up

    I too am new to running a Guardian. I created mine two days ago and just left Tortage last night. I mostly struggle with the Feats and what to apply them to. I don't want to waste them but I also want to be the most affective Guardian I can be. I have looked around to see if people have posted images of their Guardian specs but to no avail.

    I am fairly new to this game. Started in early July and have leveled up two level 80 toons. A Necro and a Demo. I have not done any dungeon runs or group quests as I am not sure how well I will do being new and still learning. I feel that the Guardian may be my incentive to learn more about this game and really getting into some hard core dungeon action. A big thanks to all of you that post your experiences and help us noobies learn!!!

    For leveling, go tempest, something like this :

    http://joharaoc.eu/feat?link=v12_114...584c05976059d8

    As you level up, just pick all the feats that give you more damage.
    When you start tanking in dungeons, you can start feating into general, to get more armor for instance, like that (for physical encounters) :

    http://joharaoc.eu/feat?link=v12_114...5976059d805cfc

    Iron skin from general tree is quite handy, even for solo gaming.

    Then you have 2 choices, you can either go for juggernaut and get cry of havoc, which an awesome aggro tool :

    http://joharaoc.eu/feat?link=v12_114...5976059d805cfc

    Or you can decide (depending on your level) to go down tempest first to get lightning strike asap, which is your biggest damage burst combo :

    http://joharaoc.eu/feat?link=v12_114...5aa4061ac05e88

    As a matter of fact, lightning strike will be used a bit like cry of havoc, since it's a 360° aoe combo, so getting both during the leveling phase is not mandatory at all.
    I for one would focus all on tempest and only get cry of havoc at the end, when you got everything you need from general and tempest, which may look like this :
